Bursa Malaysia firm at closing bell; FBM KLCI up 0.30%

Sentiment on the Bursa Malaysia stayed relatively firm on Thursday, July 23. Shares traded broadly higher for the better part of the day although gains were mostly limited. The FBM KLCI opened in the red in the early hour of trading but gained strength as the day progressed. The benchmark index moved into positive territory soon after the opening where it stayed for the remainder of the trading day.
Any selling pressure, following sharp gains over the past week, was well absorbed as investors remained upbeat on the outlook for equities. The positive sentiment was mirrored in key Asian stock markets. Relevant bellwether indices in the region ended mostly higher for the day although gains were somewhat muted following Wall Street’s slightly lower close overnight.

The benchmark index FBM KLCI gained 3.45 points or 0.30% to 1,152.15 at 5pm. Singapore’s Straits Times Index advanced 1.20% to 2,480.17 and Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 gained 0.72% to 9,792.94. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index climbed 2.96% to 19,817.70 and Shanghai’s A share index rose 0.97% to 3,328.49. Taipei’s Taiex Index lost 0.06% to 6,980.88 while Seoul’s Kospi Index up 0.16% to 1,496.49.
At the local bourse, advancing counters beat decliners with 452 stocks up, 176 down and 217 were unchanged. A total of 1.03 billion shares worth RM1.43 billion changed hands.

Leading the actively traded counters, KNM rose 3 sen to 86 sen, Lion Corp added 5.5 sen to 50 sen, Damansara Realty (DBHD) gained 2 sen to 21.5 sen, SAAG rose 1.5 sen to 29 sen and AMDB up 1 sen to 17 sen. Among heavyweights, Sime Darby added 10 sen to RM7.90, Tenaga fell 20 sen to RM8.20 and Telekom rose one sen to RM2.98.
Losers included Nestle dropped 50 sen to RM31.25, Pharmaniaga, Batu Kawan and Shell lost 10 sen each to RM3.90, RM8.80 and RM10.40 respectively.
Among bank stocks Public Bank fell 10 sen to RM10.20 while Maybank and BCHB were unchanged at RM6.40 and RM10.10 respectively. Astro gained 6 sen to RM3.44, Measat added 5 sen to RM2.15 while Tanjong Plc down 20 sen to RM14.30.
Nymex crude oil down one cents to USD65.39 per barrel.
Crude palm oil 3-month futures rose RM24 to RM2,107 per tonne. The ringgit was quoted at 3.540 to the US dollar.
