Bears Advance Towards Defensive Bulls
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA – 10,913.38) finished near an intraday nadir, surrendering 240.6 points, or 2.2%, by the time the bell mercifully sounded. Only Merck (MRK) managed to buck the trend, tacking on 0.1%, while Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) paced the 29 declining blue chips with a 5.6% drop.
While the DJIA tacked on 1.3% for the week, the index finished the month roughly 6% lower, extending its losing streak to five straight months. What's more, the blue-chip barometer swallowed a loss of 12% in the third quarter, marking its worst three-month performance since 2009.
HAPPY WEEKEND
